A ferrite measurement is a microstructure analysis in which the ferrite content of a material is determined, particularly in duplex stainless steel. Duplex materials have a structure consisting of two phases: ferrite and austenite. The ratio between these phases largely determines the properties of the material.

At MT Veendam, we count the number of intersection points in a grid, as specified by ASTM E562. To do this, a sample of the material is first prepared: the surface is polished and etched, so that the ferrite and austenite phases become clearly visible under the microscope. We then systematically determine the volume percentage of ferrite in the microstructure. We compare the results with the applicable specifications, so you know exactly whether your material meets the required standards.
