Macroscopic and Microscopic Examination

Would you like to assess the quality, structure, or potential damage of a metal product or component? MT Veendam specializes in macro and microscopic examination for businesses in the Dutch industry. Through metallographic testing, we reliably visualize both visible features and the finest details of the material structure.

What Is Macro and Microscopic Examination?

Macro and microscopic examinations are complementary forms of metallographic testing.

  • Macroscopic examination involves evaluating a prepared and usually etched cross-section with the naked eye or at low magnification. This reveals features such as weld buildup, burn-in, cracks, porosity, segregation, and other relatively large defects.
  • Microscopic examination is conducted using a light microscope at higher magnifications, providing insight into the microstructure, such as grains, phases, inclusions, precipitates, and local material irregularities.

Why Is Metallographic Testing Important?

Macro and microscopic examinations can be used for:

Our Metallographic Services

MT Veendam offers a range of metallographic testing services, including:

Would you like to know which testing method suits your material, product, or damage inquiry? Contact MT Veendam. Our accredited laboratory in Northern Netherlands will gladly advise you on macroscopic, microscopic, or combined metallographic testing.

How Do We Perform Macroscopic Examination?

For macroscopic examination, we take a representative sample, which is embedded, ground, polished, and etched as necessary according to the applicable specifications. Our specialists then assess and document the cross-section. This method is suitable for metals and alloys in the development phase, during production, and for finished products.

How Do We Conduct Microscopic Examination?

For microscopic examination, we carefully prepare the sample by embedding, grinding, and polishing it. Depending on the testing requirements, the surface may be etched to reveal specific microstructural features. Using a light microscope, we then evaluate and document aspects such as grain structure, present phases, inclusions, and any local irregularities. The chosen magnification and evaluation method are tailored to the material and the applicable standards or customer specifications.
