Various corrosion tests

At Materials Testing Veendam (MT Veendam), we perform various corrosion tests to assess the resistance of metals to corrosion. Corrosion can lead to material degradation, which affects the integrity and lifespan of structures and components.

Our corrosion tests help identify vulnerabilities, such as intergranular corrosion or pitting, and ensure reliable results in accordance with international standards. As an accredited laboratory in Veendam, Groningen, we offer corrosion testing to clients throughout the Netherlands and beyond. Whether you require a corrosion test for stainless steel, duplex materials, or other alloys, we are ready to support you with expert advice and fast turnaround times.

These corrosion tests are part of our metal testing services and are an essential part of our offering. Contact us for a no-obligation quote or request a test immediately to have your materials tested for corrosion resistance.

Corrosietest

Our corrosion tests

Below we highlight the specific corrosion tests that we perform. These tests are aimed at various forms of corrosion and are conducted according to standardized methods. Although these corrosion tests fall outside our RvA accreditation (EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017, accreditation L647), we guarantee high quality and accuracy through the use of advanced equipment and experienced specialists in Veendam.

Intergranular corrosion test (Huey test)

The Huey test is a corrosion test that determines sensitivity to intergranular corrosion in stainless steel. During this test the specimen is exposed to boiling nitric acid, after which the corrosion rate is measured. This helps in identifying carbide precipitation that reduces corrosion resistance. MT Veendam conducts the Huey corrosion test according to standard ASTM A262 Practice C.

Intergranular corrosion test (Strauss test)

The Strauss test evaluates intergranular corrosion susceptibility by bending the specimen after exposure to a copper-copper(II) sulfate-sulfuric acid solution. This corrosion test is ideal for austenitic stainless steel and detects cracks indicating sensitization (due to chromium depletion along the grain boundaries). We perform the Strauss corrosion test according to standards ISO 3651-2 Method A or ASTM A262 Practice E.

Intergranular corrosion test (Streichertest)

In the Streichertest the specimen is immersed in an iron(III) sulfate-sulfuric acid solution to assess intergranular corrosion. This corrosion test measures weight loss and is suitable for testing alloys for their resistance to aggressive environments. We apply standards ASTM A262 Practice B and ASTM G28 for the Streichertest.

Interkristallijne corrosietest (oxaalzuur etch test)

The oxalic acid etch test is a rapid screening corrosion test in which the specimen is etched in oxalic acid to examine the microstructure for intergranular attack. This helps identify sensitization without extensive exposure. ASTM A262 Practice A is the standard that MT Veendam adheres to for the oxalic acid etch test.

Pitting corrosion test

The pitting corrosion test simulates chloride-rich environments to measure resistance to pitting corrosion. Specimens are exposed to iron(III) chloride, after which pitting formation is visually and microscopically evaluated. This is crucial for materials in maritime or chemical applications. We apply the standards ASTM G48 Method A, ASTM G46 and ASTM A923 for the pitting corrosion test.

Ferroxyl test and copper sulfate test

The ferroxyl test detects iron contaminants on stainless steel surfaces that can cause corrosion. By applying a solution of potassium ferricyanide and nitric acid, blue spots become visible in the presence of free iron.

The copper sulfate test detects iron contaminants on stainless steel surfaces that can cause corrosion. By applying a solution of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid, copper-colored deposits become visible in the presence of free iron.

We perform the ferroxyl- and copper sulfate test according to ASTM A380.
