What is a fillet weld fracture test?

The fillet weld fracture test is a destructive testing method used to assess the quality and mechanical integrity of a fillet weld joint.

A fillet weld is a weld that joins two components at an angle to each other, such as in steel structures. During this fracture test, a welded test piece is subjected to a controlled load until the weld fails. By analysing the resulting fracture surface, it can be determined whether the weld meets the required quality standards and whether weld imperfections are present.

The fillet weld fracture test is a relatively simple, cost-effective and reliable method for evaluating the quality of a fillet weld. Because the test piece is irreparably damaged during testing, this method belongs to destructive material and weld testing.

Why is the fillet weld fracture test important?

The primary purpose of the fillet weld fracture test is to assess the penetration, the weld cross-section and the metallurgical quality of the welded joint. In addition, the fracture test provides insight into the presence of imperfections such as porosity, slag inclusions, lack of fusion, insufficient root fusion and cracking. The test yields valuable information about the structural reliability of the welded joint and is an important tool in quality control and welding inspection. The results are used for:

  • Qualification of welders
  • Verification of welding procedures (WPS)
  • Quality assurance in welding technology

How do we perform the fillet weld fracture test?

The fracture test begins with the production of a test piece according to the prescribed dimensions and welding parameters, depending on the applicable standard. The test piece is then mechanically loaded, for example using a vice and hammer or a hydraulic press, until the fillet weld cracks open. The way in which the weld fails and the appearance of the fracture surface form the basis for the assessment.

After breaking, the fracture surface is visually inspected and, if necessary, measured. Attention is paid to the degree of penetration, the effective throat thickness, the homogeneity of the weld metal and the presence of internal or surface discontinuities. A qualitatively good fillet weld shows an even fracture without significant defects.
